Paddle4Relief 2006
Paddle4Relief 2006 raised over £3000. 72 people took part on a day where the conditions were less than favourable. Many struggled to walk down the beach with their choice of watercraft. The majority of the craft were long boards, supported by goat boats, short boards, paddleboards and rescue skis. A fresh northerly wind meant that the conditions on the point between the two beaches were extremely rough. As it was a community event, it was decided to paddle to the point, create a memorial circle, and then return to Saunton beach.
Experienced surfers and surf lifesavers supported the less experienced participants through encouragement and physically towing individuals. The two safety boats were kept busy during the paddle, and a big thank you should go to the members of the Saunton Surf Life Saving Club for their fantastic support.
The sun shone throughout the day and provided everyone with a beautiful sunset in the evening. Everyone soaked up the community atmosphere whilst being mesmerised by the acoustic guitar and vocals provided by local surfer and musician, Doug Powell. Big Ron put on a fantastic BBQ, whilst Daisy and Kenny combined to entertain us with an extensive raffle.
Organiser, Tim Tanton, gave a heart felt thanks to all those that took part, helped out, and to the businesses that donated such a fantastic array of raffle prizes.
Even though the weather affected the numbers that took part, the total raised surpassed last years total by almost £1000. The money will go a long way towards providing the young children of Komari with a Pre School. Even as I write this, the civil war is escalating on the East Coast of Sri Lanka. Numerous locals have lost their lives in recent weeks; others have had their businesses attacked.
Friends living in Arugam Bay suggest it is unsafe to venture out there at present. Our next trip will be on hold until it is safe to travel freely on the east coast and allow us to commence the project. |
